John P. Dessereau, a New York visual artist and illustrator, moves between digital and physical art. A graffiti artist on physical media and illustrator in the digital environment, he has worked with The New York Times, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair on the illustration of the NBA’s most fashionable players in 2021. He will illustrate Campazzo in a portrait of his arrival in the NBA and one of his most famous plays with the Denver Nuggets.

What is your background?

I am a native New Yorker. My mom is Puerto Rican and my Dad is French Canidian. I grew up in The Bronx.

When did you start creating art pieces?

I remember being in the 4th or 5th grade and really enjoying making the cover art for my book reports, more than I enjoyed doing the actual report. I must have been about 10 years old. I remember drawing before then but It was around that time I fell in love with art.

Living in NYC, what a great place. Do you think living in this city influences creating art?

Absolutely! Growing up in New York City is such a blessing. I soaked up all the art that was around. I love graffiti as much as I love museums and both were very influential on me.

What are your favourite places in the city?

I really love the Williamsburg Bridge. I run over it often. It is where I get my peace of mind and recenter when I need to.

Your work has a very strong style. Did it take you a long time to define it?

My style is something that has come along naturally over many years. To be honest I don’t see my style, other people do. For me it is just my natural hand, not anything I am doing on purpose.

Why do you think about collecting NFTs?

I like the idea of uniqueness and collectables. NFT’s are bringing that personal touch to a digital platform. I like that It gives artists the chance to make digital art unique and special. I also like how the coding in NFT’s allow for artist to be automatically compensated when the artwork sells. I hope that quality continues to drive NFT’s and not just the market. But over all I appreciate any platform or technology that gives artists independence.

Any anecdotes that you have experienced in recent times regarding your work-day?

I tell myself “Anything you do everyday is your religion”.
It keeps me humble and hungry to keep making artwork.
